GP Rating stands for General Purpose Rating. It is a 6 months long course. After completion of the course, candidates may join Merchant Navy ships as Deck or Engine crew. Along with sea service, they may also rise through ranks, depending on their performance.
Age limit
Between 17½ to 25 years of age when the course starts.
Educational Qualifications
Candidates must have passed 10th standard examinations from a Recognized board. Minimum marks requirement is 40%.
Deck Rating course
Though GP Ratings course covers aspects of deck crew training, separate deck crew training courses are also available. This course duration 6 months.
Engine Rating course
Though GP Ratings course covers aspects of engine crew training, separate engine crew training courses are also available. This course duration 6 months.
Other than B.Sc. Nautical Science course, Diploma version of Nautical Science is another course available on front of merchant navy aspirants. The course followed by 18 months of sea service will lead to 2nd mate foreign going certificate from the Ministry of Shipping, along with a B.Sc. Nautical Science Degree!
Age limit
Upper age limit is 25 years. Candidate should not be more than 25 years of age.
Educational Qualifications
10+2 passed (with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and English subjects) from a recognized board or equivalent. Minimum aggregate marks in PCM subjects must not be less than 60%. Marks in English subject in 10th and 12th board exams should not be less than 50%.
Medical Fitness
Candidates should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms of DGS, with eyesight 6/6 in both the eyes, and with no colour blindness.
BSc Nautical Science is a 3-year undergraduate program. It is a professional bachelor’s degree that deals with the study of the basic academic and practical devices required to safely navigate and operate marine vehicles, such as a ship. This certificate is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, India.
After 12 months of Sea service, candidates may become Navigation Officers on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World!

This is a two year Pre-sea training course for Diploma Holders (DME) leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of competency, awarded by the Directorate General of Shipping (Government of India), after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. This course is strictly residential.
After 6 months of Sea service, candidates may become Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World.

Educational Qualifications
This program is meant for Diploma holders. Diploma holders in Mechanical/Electrical/Naval Architecture/Electrical and Electronics Engineering branches may apply for this course. Candidates must have scored minimum 50% marks in the final year of Diploma course.
Medical Fitness
Candidates should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with eyesight 6/12 eyes and 6/9 in better eye, 6/18 in other eye, and with no colour blindness.
Electro Technical Officer (ETO).
Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Course is a Four months Pre sea Training course for Graduates those who have completed Diploma or B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication/ Communication Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent. ETO Course acts as a gateway for the Electrical & Electronics Graduates to enter into Merchant Navy.
